Katie’s T-Shirt Quilt

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   2007

Cathy Sayre wanted her daughter Katie to give up some of her old T-shirts so I agreed to make a quilt.  All the T-shirt quilts I had seen had blocks the same size, but the prints on the shirts were all different sizes.  It took a while to make a custom arrangement of different size blocks, but I like it.

I used lightweight iron-on interfacing on the t-shirts before I trimmed the printed parts.  This stabilizes the cotton knit well.  The dark blocks did not contrast with the black sashing, so I gave them borders.

I have learned to put more actual quilting into a quilt.  The T-shirts are quilted by outlining the images with matching thread, a ball point needle and free-motion stitching.

The outside border is quilted with little stylized T-shirts.  They don’t show up very much with black thread.
