Rita Rettinger didn’t actually NEED a quilt.  She’s a quilter herself and has many friends who quilt.  Rita is an avid bird watcher and I had wanted to make a quilt with birds in it ever since Aunt Eloise gave me a piece of fabric with birds of the states on it.  At least some of the states – it wasn’t big enough to have all of them.  And I had other fabrics with birds.

Since the bird prints were small.  I used them as the centers of log cabin blocks, each made with the same stripe.
